Yes! You know what that means?? The holidays will be here before you know it! Of course, you need to get your family photo taken, so book that NOW (and I don't care if it's not with me. Just do it. Photographers are CRAZY busy in October and especially November). You wouldn't believe how many people will call my in DECEMBER for family photos and expect a card to be made and shipped to them in 24 hours. Not gonna happen:(

So, although I absolutely love photographing, I've also found that I enjoy making cards, announcements, and books for people. For the past 3 years, I've quietly designed special products like this for people and now this year I've decided to promote holiday cards.

Anyway, here's a sneak peek at a few of the 2009 holiday cards. This is NOT the entire collection, so contact me if you're interested in seeing more: lmdabney@comcast.net, http://www.leslidabneyphotography.com/. You can also see a few of the 5X7 folded cards and flat cards here: www.pickyourholidaycard.com/5x7_folded and www.pickyourholidaycard.com/5x7_flat.

If you already have a favorite photo that you would like to use on your cards, that's fine!

Send it to me along with a copyright release (if it was taken by a professional photographer).

Orders will be taken until November 21. After that, a rush fee will be applied.

Oh, and here's the most important part: If you order $100 or more during the month of October, you receive a 10% discount. Just mention that you read this on the blog or Facebook. How's that? Now get moving! Happy holidays!

Giving

My sweet friend Robyn is one of the founders of an organization called Girls Run located in The Woodlands. Their motto is "I Am One Young Voice, But I Can Change The World." The group's mission is "to empower girls to be leaders in their community, fundraise for local and national cancer initiatives all while developing and instilling an enthusiasm for fitness and running."

I've always known Robyn as a huge supporter of the fight against cancer. She is one of those people who gives. A lot. I would be willing to bet she is also a very content person. In my latest Professional Photographers of America newsletter, this was the lead-in sentence: When you give from the heart, you get back more than you expect. Along with many other resolutions for the up-coming months (I don't wait until the new year to make them!), one of my goals is to give more; however, I'm not expecting to get back anything other than the satisfaction that I helped someone else in a small or big way.

So, I did donate a gift certificate to the Girls Run fundraising auction this weekend (thank you for telling me about it, Robyn!)

If you're interested in learning more about Girls Run, visit the website: www.girlsrun.net.

Meet Elizabeth--SENIOR 2010!

Sooo. . . how many times did I say, "Oh, this is so cute!" after snapping a photograph of Elizabeth?? I wish I wouldn't look at the LCD screen so much! I can't help it! Cute really isn't the best word for Elizabeth. She's more than cute! She's. . . lovely. But that would've been weird to say, "Oh, you're so lovely!" over and over again. Maybe I should just keep my mouth shut until I have something profound to say? Yeah, right.

Elizabeth is the drum major at her school as well as the editor of the literary magazine. Impressive! However, I was even more impressed with her demeanor during the photo shoot. She's easy-going, yet poised. A very confident girl with a creative flair that ranges from music to photography. I must say, I'm at ease when I think of young people like her as our future!

Thanks to her mom, Allison, for choosing me to photograph this beautiful young lady!

Happy Birthday, Arden

Our air conditioner quit on us tonight. Perfect timing: we are moving AGAIN to another rent house. Soon. In about 1-3 weeks? I can't sleep. No surprise. Most nights I crawl into bed with Arden. "Mommy, will you lay down with me?" is her whimper. I tell her she's too big for me to sleep with her every night. But secretly I don't mind. I grab her hand, and she falls asleep quickly while I stare at the dark ceiling trying desperately to remember everything I can about her as a baby.

We were in the 1915 Bethlehem house. Her crib and room furniture were black, walls light pink, carpet taupe. I remembering photographing her for the first time when she was only 2 weeks old. I used my 35mm camera with black and white film. I framed the pictures. I still like them. She had this doe-eyed face, observant. I loved laying her out on the floor after a bath and massaging her little body while lullabies played in the background. She would kick her legs with delight and coo. I'd stare at her and ask her who she was going to be when she grew up, what was she going to sound like. I longed to hear her talk. How would she sound? Those evenings were so calm and peaceful. I can't get that time back.

We were in the front living room of the Bethlehem house. The large-paned window let the light in and I held 5 month old Arden in my arms as we waltzed around the room to George Strait's "You'll Be There." She sometimes fell asleep while I danced with her.

These times have passed, and I can't get them back. I can't stop thinking about this, even though I know you are supposed to "live in the moment." What's done is done. There's no turning back. But I'm afraid I am a person of memories. I can't let them go. I long for those days, but I know I will one day long for today. So, I guess it's true. We should live in the moment.

My first-born will be 5 on August 14. She starts kindergarten August 24. She's 2 and her grandmother Nancy, dubbed Lolli by Gracey (and grandpa's name is Pop!), wanted me to photograph her and make a book about being 2. She stole the show as we all watched her "barbeque" and "cook" in her play kitchen, read to us from one of her many books, play with her princesses and castle, look at herself in the mirror, twirl and dance in her precious pink/purple tutu, play the piano, and last but not least--pose on my vintage suitcase.

I've known Nancy for a while. She's so easy to talk to, very classy, and extremely down-to-earth. And what do you know? Her son Brad and daughter-in-law Melissa are the same way! Oh, and of course, Gracey was a delight. She never had a single meltdown and remained calm and compliant for the entire session!!! Amazing! Okay, Lolli (sorry if I spelled your name wrong!), Mom and Dad, here's a sneak peek. The slideshow/gallery will be ready by the end of the week:

Strike a Pose. . . Vogue!

Okey, dokey. Here's my last post of the evening before crashing, getting a few hours of sleep, and heading off to Playa del Carmen, Mexico! There's no way I could leave without posting about these two beauties. Kelly and Maggie called me about taking their senior pics after they saw their friend's pics that I took. I love to get clients through word of mouth because that means they've seen my work and like my style. Chances are we will work well together because of this. And we did! Both Kelly and Maggie were wonderful models! They were very enthusiastic and had their own ideas about what they wanted, even suggesting poses. They really got into the session and gave me some amazing expressions, as evident in these shots:

Maggie's brunette hair and Kelly's blonde hair look very chic when paired together:

I couldn't stop admiring Maggie's shoes. This one is the Richardson/Haack family. They came together to celebrate Katy HS senior Matte's graduation. I had the pleasure of photographing Matte last summer! She's an outstanding athlete (going to play softball for Kansas!) and a really beautiful young lady. Leslie, her mom, was definitely the coordinator of this event. When I arrived, she had it all planned with a written list of who was to be in which picture. It was a relief for me because there was absolutely no chaos at all. Everyone was calm and did exactly what she said. . . would this have anything to do with her being a principal??

I also must mention that Leslie and Matte have helped me tremendously with my high school senior photography business in Katy. Thank you very, very much! Here are just a few of my favorite photos:

All of the kids in this family are not only adorable but so well-behaved! I couldn't believe how cute and sweet they were while waiting for their pics to be taken. I started out photographing babies and children, so I automatically try to get shots of them!

This is Leslie's family:

I especially like this pic because it's Leslie, her two sisters, Leann and Laura (I apologize in advance if I spelled names wrong), and mother. Very sweet:

And this one is so pretty of the three sisters:
I love this one of Leslie's mother-in-law and John, her grandson (I hope I got that right!):

After the family session, Leslie asked me to take a few pics of Matte in a field near the Katy water tower. Matte had a couple of gorgeous dresses, her Kansas shirt, and graduation gown that she wanted to wear. This pic of Leslie and Matte makes me think of my own daughters and how fast they will grow up and become lovely young ladies. Sigh. I just love this pic:

Matte looking fantastic in blue:

Thanks, Haacks! For the longest time, Lori and I were partners in crime. We were FAR from being domesticated mothers. We were Thelma and Louise (in a non-violent way. Oh, and we definitely did not run into anyone as hot as Brad Pitt is in that movie. Unfortunately.) Let's just say that Lori and I had too much fun together to settle down and be moms. No. Way.

So, Lori took the plunge first, having Ella in April 2003. She asked me to be present at the birth, if possible. What??? Ummm. . . okay. I made it. It wasn't so bad. In fact, it took a lot of mystery out of the concept of labor/delivery. In August 2004, I had Arden. Fast forward to 2009 and Ella is 6, Arden 5. This was our 2nd visit to the Hyatt Lost Pines in Bastrop, TX. The girls have so much fun together! Oh, and we have two more: Lori's Addie, who turned 2 in March, and my Tess who turns 2 this July. Whew! We're still trying to decide if we should brave it and bring all four girls to Lost Pines next summer. . .the grandmas may have to go on that trip for back-up!

This pic cracks me up because all I see is a little version of me on the left and Lori on the right:

Arden, trying to give the perfect expression:

Ella, close up:
Ella and Arden hanging out before going to "camp" so Lori and I could go to the spa!

This beautiful owl was perched on a post in the Hummingbird Garden located outside our room. I chose it because the synopsis is "Sweden, early 1900s. In a time of social change and unrest, war and poverty, a young working class woman, Maria, wins a camera in a lottery. The decision to keep it alters her whole life. The camera grants Maria new eyes with which to see the world, and brings the charming photographer "Piff Paff Puff" into her life. Trouble ensues when Maria's alcoholic, womanizing husband, feels threatened by the young man and his wife's newfound outlook on life."

I was profoundly moved by this movie, not because it was about a woman's discovery of photography and how empowering it was for her, although that was intriguing. The characters are wonderful and the acting superb. There's one moment when Maria tells her photographer friend, Mr. Pedersen, that she doesn't want the camera anymore because it takes her away from her children and responsibilities. To watch her become so taken in by the Contessa camera she uses is extremely poignant for me because I feel the exact same way. I have a love/hate relationship with my art because I can't live without it (or writing), yet it takes so much out of me and leaves me with little to offer my family once I've set out to create something. And you do learn a lot about yourself in the process of exploring your creativity. On the one hand, I can't imagine not photographing or writing. But, as a mother, I do feel very guilty at times because I devote so much time to my art.

The cinematography in this movie is equally breathtaking. It has a vintage, warm look to it and the settings are beautiful. I would have to say Everlasting Moments ranks as one of the best movies I've ever seen.

Pause

My sweet neighbor asked me if I would photograph two 2 1/2 year old twins (J and J) who are about to go up for adoption. She and her husband are foster parents, and they wanted to help the mom find a good place for her two boys. Of course, I said yes. The mom wanted pics of her boys and of herself with them before they go away to live in another place. I have no idea what her circumstances are, so I am in no place to judge.

I walked over to my neighbor's house with my two daughters (ages 4 1/2 and 22 months), and my 2 cameras strapped across my shoulder. J and J were typical toddlers: rummaging through toys, drinking from sippy cups, running around. I took some photographs indoors of them with their mom, and then we went outside on the front porch and took some more. As young as they are, I could still sense their apprehension. Kids know more than we think. When I got home and really looked at the pics of the two boys, I paused. Their faces took my breath away. They know what's happening. Their lives will forever change. They love their mama. The eyes said it all. What innocence, yet what realization. Still, children are amazingly resilient. I hope J and J find a loving home and enjoy their childhood.

You never know how what you do may impact someone later on. I hope the pics I took will stay with the mom and these two boys forever. This family was one of my first clients. I photographed their beautiful little boys--Will and Sam--when Will was about 2 1/2 and Sam was 4 months old. Now, Will is 6 1/2 and Sam is almost 4! Unbelievable! So, needless to say, when mom Maureen called me to photograph baby Alice, I was very honored to do so. It is uncanny how much she looks like her brothers. I even included some pics of Sam when he was her age, just to show how similar they look!

Watching Alice was like traveling back 4 1/2 years ago when my older daughter was a baby. Alice loves the pacifier, and so did my daughter. I loved listening to her make cooing sounds as she sucked on the paci to calm down. Strange how little things like that bring back huge memories. Alice made me very nostalgic for the days when I was in awe of this little person I brought into the world. Maureen was right when she said she wanted to capture Alice at this age because it is so fleeting.

Here's Alice's brother Sam when he was almost exactly her age. Here:

Now, back to my observations of today's session (Yes, today's!! I'm leaving town for Memorial weekend, and I can't bear to make Shannon wait to see some of these gorgeous pics until Monday!) So, Shannon is the kind of girl who makes you feel warm and fuzzy inside. She met me wearing this fantastic green dress and a dazzling smile. I absolutely LOVE photographing seniors who are excited about their photo session! Shannon brought the perfect wardrobe--lots of color, jeans, dresses. Oh, and she brought her lovely personality. It doesn't get much better than that!

Shannon, a Katy High School senior, has been accepted into the veterinarian program at Texas A&M University, thus, my blog title: Beauty and Brains. This program is extremely prestigious! I've heard from many people that it is very, very difficult to get in, even with good grades. I know her mom and dad are so proud of her!

This is one of my favorites (among many):

My veterinarian saved my dog's life in January. He had to have major surgery. She spent 3 hours working on him, and I'm happy to say he's made a full recovery and is like a new dog! I am still in awe that she was able to save him. As soon as I saw her bright eyes and gorgeous smile, I knew she would be a fantastic model! Turns out, she's a cheerleader and has been cheerleading since she was 4 years old! So that's why she has such a natural smile. It's also why she has an amazing figure and was very comfortable in front of the camera. Again, my theory that athletes make wonderful models holds true! Her photos are breath-taking. Here are just a few (it was very hard to pick these sneak peeks!!):
Jennifer wants to be a professional cheerleader. I'm so annoyed when someone wears too much of it. If I can smell you before I see you, that's not good! Needless to say, I am in love with Christopher Brosius's fragrances: http://www.cbihateperfume.com/. I found his perfume in a wonderful boutique in Austin called Bows and Arrows http://www.shopbowsplusarrows.com/. The bottles were so simple, the names captivating, the smells mesmerizing. I couldn't resist. I HAD to buy some! Here is an excerpt from Brosius's poem titled "CB Manifesto":

I hate perfume.
Perfume is too often an ethereal corset trapping everyone in the same unnatural shape
A lazy and inelegant concession to fashionable ego
Too often a substitute for true allure and style
An opaque shell concealing everything – revealing nothing
A childish masque hiding the timid and unimaginative
An arrogant slap in the face from across the room
People who smell like everyone else disgust me

The poem is printed on his large bottles. The scents are beautiful! I bought Narcissus from the Metamorphosis series. He describes the scent as ". . . clean running water over mossy stones, the wind gently blowing through green leaves." It is AMAZINGLY fresh and light. Today I bought about five 2ml bottles (they're about $12 each!) to try--At the Beach, The Summer Kitchen, (ocean)/Eternal Return, Greenbriar 1968, and CB93. Aren't the names cool? And the descriptions of the scents are so poetic. I'm sooo excited to wear them or even mix them! It's not perfume but subtle everyday smells that sort of "waft" around you.

A Creative Spirit

I knew I would like Mallory when I heard her message on my voice mail. She sounded so genuine. . . and she IS! I liked her even more when I talked to her on the phone and we made plans to meet for her senior photo shoot. She was very excited about it and had lots of ideas! She was an absolute photographer's dream in front of the camera--another natural model. I'm getting a lot of these lately, aren't I? They are going to spoil me!

I think I connected with Mallory because she is a creative spirit. She loves videotaping/editing and has quite a knack for it. I used to teach, so I still love to see young people tap into their creativity and explore it relentlessly. I don't know, it just makes me happy. I like to see people take risks with their creativity because it inspires me. Mallory could very easily be a model. Look at her! But she's much more than a pretty face. Yeah, I know, isn't it disgusting how AMAZING she looks at 7 1/2 months pregnant? She literally has that pregnancy glow. Not only that, but she was fantastic to work with. I couldn't believe how calm and collected she was. She climbed hills for me, sat down, stood up (these things are quite difficult when pregnant). She was also a natural model. I rarely had to pose her. She just knew what to do!

So, my sweet friend Chas (check out her website: http://www.chasbiediger.com/) hooked me up with beautiful Janet. She wanted some shots of her belly, but more importantly, she did this as a gift for dad Douglas's 35th birthday. Can you imagine how excited he's going to be to see these?? Janet has really embraced her pregnancy and wanted to capture this tiny piece of time because we moms know how soon we forget the way our bodies looked and felt when we were pregnant (and some of us would rather forget!). We so easily forget the smell of our newborn baby, the feel of him/her cradled in our arms. We forget our toddlers first words and their funny expressions. We forget their first day of kindergarten. These are memories we hold onto desperately. A photograph can remind us of where we've been and record the moments we never want to forget. And let me tell you, looking this good in the last trimester of pregnancy cannot be ignored! Janet, you are going to be sooo glad you did this. I know you will hold onto these forever. Congratulations!

I have to say that this one is so lovely:

Best Friends Forever

Christina and Laura, two Morton Ranch HS seniors, have been best buds since kindergarten. Watching them interact while shooting this session was extra special for me because it reminded me of my best friend from grade school days. We are still very close. There's something about the friends you make in your early years. True, not all of us keep in touch with the people we once knew as children/teenagers, but those of us who do know how long-lasting and genuine these friendships can be. Christina is going to Texas State and Laura is going to A&M. I have a feeling they will be friends for many more years to come.

I loved hanging out with these girls because they didn't mind getting a little dirty! It didn't bother them one bit to climb fences, sit in dusty places. You gotta like that kind of attitude! The best was when they both pulled out their Converse tennis shoes to wear with their prom dresses. . . seriously, these are my kinda girls!! Home of Champions!

I told Austin I felt like I was photographing a celebrity when I met him and his mom and dad at Katy High School this past weekend. I mean, he's played on a high school team that has won 2 state championships in a row! That's no small feat. In fact, it's downright AMAZING! Katy High School is THE premiere high school football program in the great state of Texas. Being the down-to-earth guy he is (and his parents are, too), they all laughed hysterically when I said that. But you know what? That's what makes him GREAT. He's soooo laid back, cool, collected. I can just see him on the field during the state championship game. He probably wasn't nervous. Or maybe he channeled that energy into focusing on the game. He's an offensive lineman, so maybe he gave one of his fierce looks (yes, he does have a few. Trust me. I captured them on camera!) through his face mask and scared the daylights out of his opponent. That I wouldn't doubt! Or maybe he smirked at the guy he faced on the other side of the scrimmage line and then bulldozed him. Or maybe I have no idea what he did, but I do know that he is darn good at what he does, and so is the rest of his team and coaches.

But what really makes Austin special is his likability factor. He's got a great sense of humor! When I would pose him and ask him if he understood what I was trying to get him to do, he would answer, "Si." He never complained, followed instructions, and was sooo polite, answering "yes, ma'am."

Austin plans to play football for Angelo State next year and study International Studies. He's got it all: athleticism, personality, good looks, and TWO state championships under his belt as well as two state championship rings on his fingers (can you see them in the pics? They're the two bling blings on his hands). It doesn't get much better than that, Austin! Congratulations to you and best of luck in San Angelo!!

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://dabneyphoto.blogspot.com/2009/04/tigerland-baby-home-of-champions.html' title='Tigerland, baby. . . I graduated from there in. . . well, never mind. I still have a hard time calling it Texas State. In my heart, it will always be Southwest Texas. Anyway, she picked a good school!

I'm wondering if Hilary knows how photogenic she is? She has this natural smile, piercing dark eyes, and gorgeous long hair. No wonder photographing seniors is my favorite thing to do! They're all so attractive, full of energy, and ready to take on the world! Here are a few of my favorites from Hilary's session:

Color is Key

I am LOVING my recent senior sessions! I had another one in Katy this week. This is Allison. She brought a beautiful wardrobe--full of vibrant colors which is exactly what I like for photographs. As you can see, the colors really POP and complement her dark hair and brown eyes. Well, it would be safe to say that Allison looks good in just about anything! However, she did a fabulous job with her clothing selections. She's got a good eye for fashion! Allison, it was a pleasure photographing you and meeting your mom Kay (my assistant for the shoot!). I worry he is dreading the shoot, wishing he were somewhere else, angry at Mom for setting it up. I was dead wrong with this one. Tayler was so incredibly cool. Yes, he's definitely cute, but that will only get you so far. He's FUN (or at least he acted like he was having fun. Maybe he was just trying to be nice to me?) Well, even if he was pretending to have fun, he's polite and that is a HUGE asset. So, back to Tayler. He's a Sealy Tiger! That's not just a high school football player. He's a SEALY TIGER, people. You know, Sealy Tigers, the TX high school team that has won about a zillion state championships? Anyway, they are icons in the TX high school football arena. And did I mention how much I love photographing athletes? There's something about them--other than confidence and poise, they are usually good at taking direction which is key in a photo shoot. Take Tayler, for example. He's very photogenic. Obviously:

He knew how to pose with little direction from me! This one is PERFECT:

And another natural pose by Tayler. Isn't he handsome?? Seriously. He also chose some of the locations where we photographed. He had a great eye for settings!

Tayler was a receiver for the Tigers this year. He's also a basketball player. Oh, and he's going to Sam Houston State University and wants to study accounting--so, he's smart, too!

All I have to say is WOW. We are moving out of it this Thursday. Tonight was the last night my daughters will sleep in the house on 1915 Bethlehem. Arden acted whiny all day, and I wasn't quite sure why. Did I not think she might be troubled by our sudden dishevelment? I always read her a book before bed. But, her books are packed. This sent her into a hissy fit! When I told her tonight was her last night in the house, she burst into tears and said she didn't want to leave her room, that she liked it. I cried with her. Not because I particularly like her room, but because of the memories the room brings to mind. This was the room where we stared in awe at her tiny little newborn self on the change table in the dim light. Where I lay her on the floor for a baby massage, her tiny legs still scrunched up like a newborn and quietly watched me caress her soft skin and whisper to her, what will you be? what kind of person will you be? How will you sound? The room where she lay in the Moses basket, I on the twin bed, drifting in and out of sleep, waiting for her to stir. This was the room where she play with her Barbie dolls, colored, watched dvds, dressed in tutus and butterfly wings.

We love our neighbors. To the right, Dian, Gary, and Jody. Hook 'em, Horns! Dian, the cook, gardener, and most active woman I've ever seen. I hope she soon becomes a grandma because she will be the best one on earth. Gary, the golfer, photographer, and Dancing with the Stars fan. Jody, the die-hard Longhorn, artist, and also a fantastic cook. We will miss the Parkers dearly.

To the left, Charles, Millie, and Christina (whom Arden and Tess adore). Charles, the smart engineer, cigar smokin', overall wearing, fishin', boat cruisin', politically incorrect (but we love it!), Mexico travelin' man! His sweet wife Millie, a Neiman Marcus Escada buyer/seller for many years, a class act, gentle spirit, beautiful woman. And Christina. Ahhh, Christina. I watched her grow from 5 to 16, from riding her tricycle in the driveway to anticipating a car. She's often my photo assistant and babysitter, St. Pius X student, lover of books, fashion, Taylor Swift, the Twilight series. And my daughters are her biggest fans. We love the Zubes!

This house is full of memories I will never forget. Thank you, 1915 Bethlehem.

Classy Kat

The first thing I noticed when I met Katherine (Kat is her nickname) was her amazing hair! It is simply divine. Of course, there's a lot more to her than that. Besides her obvious beauty, this young lady is a creative spirit. She's an artist. She loves to draw and brought a piece of her artwork for some of the photos. She also loves Audrey Hepburn. I can see why. Kat is pure class. She has this talent for art, but she also wants to be a nurse. What a wonderful combination of creative talent and compassion. Enter these two sweethearts: Taylor (almost 5--don't you dare just say she's 4!) and Ellis (almost 2). They are super special to me because I have literally watched them grow. They both go to the same school as my two daughters, are the exact same ages as mine, and attend the same classes!! I was thrilled when their mom, Mandy, asked me to photograph them. I have admired Mandy and dad Zack from afar ever since we went to Taylor's 4th birthday party. It was probably the coolest kiddo birthday party EVER. All the kids dressed up in fairy tale costumes, met a real live Cinderella who put make-up on them, read to them, danced with them. The kids were awestruck! As if that party doesn't prove it, Mandy and Zack are simply fantastic parents who like to have fun with their girls. They helped me a lot during this session, making the girls laugh and have a good time without really realizing I was there for some SERIOUS business. Ha! Oh, and grandma Mimi was also on hand and helped out so much with carrying all our gear. Here's a tiny sneak peek:

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://dabneyphoto.blogspot.com/2009/04/tc-jester-soiree.html' title='T.C. The first was with my friend Abbie who I met when I taught at Presbyterian School 3 years ago. Her warm smile drew me in, but her Canon 70-200mm lens really got me! When we first met, we were both tinkering with the idea of being serious photographers. We love the art and talked about it every time we saw each other in the school hallways.

So, I ran into Abbie at a Presbyterian girls lacrosse game. There we stood with our massive Canon 70-200mm lenses in hand. We both laughed about how many people have approached us and either said, that's one BIG lens, or that's a SERIOUS lens. In between clicks we shared photography stories and tricks of the trade. It's been neat to see her business grow and watch her embrace her talent for wedding photography. I've never told her this, but I don't know what I admire more about her: her photography skills or her mothering skills. Her kids are amazing! The whole family has so much fun together. I finally met Mr. Flynn at the lacrosse game. He's the same way: witty, warm, easy-going. Abbie truly has fun with her kids and they adore her. She also takes fantastic photos of them. Her website is http://www.abbieflynnphoto.com/. Check her out, especially if you are looking for a wedding photographer!

My second encounter with a photographer this past week was at Starbucks. I straddled the parking line boundary with my car (only because the car next to me did the same thing and forced me to) and the truck that pulled up next to me had to cross his parking line as well. We both emerged from our vehicles at the same time and I heard a friendly voice say, "Well, looks like we took up 4 parking spots between the two of us!" Normally, I would just say "yeah" and walk on, but this guy was so friendly and immediately engaging. We strolled into the coffee shop together, both desperately needing a caffeine perk, but acting like we were casual drinkers (instead of hard-core coffeeholics; well, at least I am!) I asked him what he did for a living and he said he was an architectural photographer. That's all Carl had to say. I was immediately interested! To make a long story short, Carl gave me a few of mini-lessons with my camera and we talked a little bit about the business side of photography. I was in awe. He's been photographing for a long time and truly does some amazing work. His website is http://www.carlmayfield.com/. Check it out!! Oh, and here's the look on my face that he captured as he was trying to explain a camera setting to me. I asked him how to clean up all the wrinkles, but he couldn't do that for me. At least not right there. That would require PhotoShop. Seriously, though. I can't believe the age lines. Thanks a lot, Carl!

Family Roots

My second "Katy Girl" session took place on the client's property. Kesley lives in the country on a lovely piece of land that has been in her family for many generations (I think Mr. Fraley said it was in their family for 4 generations--since the late 1800s!!) This session was extra special because of where we were photographing. There were beautiful trees (planted when her dad was a young boy growing up in the same house), a rustic barn, shed, gravel road, old signs, a wooden fence--basically, all the things I love to have handy during a photo shoot!

Kesley has the prettiest auburn/red hair! People pay lots of money for extensions to get their hair to look like hers! Her eyes are stunning, too. I thought she looked so gorgeous with the browns and blues in this photo:

Since we were photographing on her family property, Kesley's mom and dad were there. Again, these Katy girls are such reflections of their parents: the Fraleys were so warm and inviting as soon as I got there. Karen, Kesley's mom, quietly observed and helped A LOT. Mr. Fraley did his share of heavy lifting! Thanks! It was obvious they are so proud of Kesley.

Here's Kesley by one of those grand trees in her front yard:
The barn and shed made GREAT backdrops! I love this one of her. She has a fantastic smile, but she also has a great serious look, too:

Towards the end of the session, Kesley brought out these amazing black western boots! I told her she HAD to wear them with the fancy black dress--I love juxtaposing the rugged with the elegant:

What an honor it was to photograph Kesley in a very sentimental place. I grew up in the country on land that has been in my family for many, many years. I know the love that goes into taking care of your land and property. The Fraley home represented them--peaceful, serene, warm, inviting, and loving. Kesley, you are a gem with your bright eyes and sunshine smile. I can't wait for you to see the rest of these!

How Bout Them Katy Girls?

Wow. Time has gone by sooo fast! I can't believe I haven't posted since the first of December 08?? That's terrible. I'll just blame it on my 4 1/2 year old and 20 month old daughters. Surely that's a good enough excuse! Speaking of daughters (and mothers--we'll get to that later), I had the pleasure of photographing two more Katy HS girls this past weekend. What is it about these girls? I adore all of them!!!

On Saturday, I photographed Megan. She's a beautiful brunette with piercing brown eyes. She's also an athlete. She said she's a jeans/T-shirt/sweats kind of girl, but I think there's more to her than that! She's got a bit of girliness in her somewhere. This picture is evidence:

So, clearly,Megan's a beauty, but what I liked so much about her was her laid-back, casual attitude. She was not afraid to try different poses and brought the CUTEST outfits. The purple dress was awesome, but checkout the sophisticated black hat (I LOVE hats!):

I mentioned daughters and moms at the beginning of this post because a lot of times, the mom accompanies the daughter. Megan's mom came with her. In every mom/daughter set, I see myself with my own daughters in a few years! It's really touching. I love to watch how they are with one another. Megan's mom was a JOY to have during the photo session! She quietly observed and let Megan be herself. She helped carry my gear and props and even marched through the high, wet grass and over numerous ant piles! Pat, you are a trooper! Seriously, though, I can see why these Katy girls are so well-grounded. Their moms are fantastic.

Here's Megan in her letter jacket. Remember what I said about her piercing brown eyes?

I love this photo of Megan. She has such a great smile. Megan, you are beauty, inside and out!

Anthropologie Shoot

I took senior pics of beautiful Abby in Katy at the Outdoor Learning Center near Katy HS. Her mom suggested it, and I had actually noticed the place the last time I was there to take senior pics, so I was very interested in seeing what the spot looked like and using it for this shoot. Beth, Abby's mom, asked if her neighbor could bring her super cool vintage car to the shoot to use as a prop. Heck, yeah! The car was perfect!

Abby could not have been a better model! First of all, have you EVER seen anyone more gorgeous? I know for a fact I did not look this fantastic when I was 18! And she was so incredibly easy to work with--very open to my direction, smiled, laughed, looked serious on cue. She was a photographer's dream! Trust me, it makes my job soooo much easier. I had forgotten how much of a challenge 12 months-24 months can be. . . well, I didn't forget. I just needed a refresher course. Tess was supposed to wear Arden's pirate costume I got for her this year. When it came in, it was WAY too small. The skirt practically rode up under her arms! That's okay, I thought. Tess can wear it, and we'll let Arden pick out another costume. Tess DID NOT want to wear the pirate costume. What to do? I pulled out the handy ol' UT cheerleader outfit. "Oh, won't you smile a while for me, Sarah?" Yeah, I'm giving away my age. I always think of that song whenever I'm around a Sarah. This little young lady was dressed and ready to go for her family photo shoot at their new house. I felt very comfortable photographing her because she's the same age as my older daughter (in fact, they are only 2 days apart!), so I feel like a pro with 4 year olds. Sarah dictated what she would say before I clicked. It wasn't "cheese" or anything boring like that. Sometimes it was her own invented word or a silly combo like "frog feet." Actually, I don't know if that was one of the word combos, but it sounds good. Dad even came up with one. What was it? Macaroni and cheese? Help me out here, Steve! Better yet, help me out, Sarah! I guarantee you she remembers.

Anyway, Sarah's dresses were adorable and fit her to a T. She's an incredibly bright, sophisticated four-year-old. She even helped me pose Mom and Dad for their pics! On Oct. 7, I took his fiance Heather's bridal portraits at the Dallas Arboretum. What a beautiful backdrop for her portraits! There literally wasn't a bad spot as far as scenery was concerned. My 4 year old daughter Arden is the flower girl in the wedding, so she came along and posed in her "princess" dress at the beginning of the session. She and Heather were real troopers during this 3 hour photo session. . . it was super windy, too, but it was like a natural fan blowing Heather's hair:

Here's one of Heather with Arden: Here are some of my favorites:

LOVE the way the wind blew Heather's veil in this one:

Heather said she liked the ones where she was smiling more than the ones where she wasn't. My husband and I met her and her husband John on a trip to Playa del Carmen, Mexico, during the summer of 2002. We all rode together in a taxi to the super awesome resort Maroma. Lee was about six months pregnant with her daughter at the time. We immediately hit it off! I couldn't get over how unbelievably hip Lee was, being pregnant and all. During the whole vacation (and we hung out a lot! The resort was small and incredibly intimate.), I never once heard her complain. She was positive, upbeat, and no-nonsense about being pregnant. And you would think being a nurse would make her cynical! No. Confident and poised are the words that come to mind when I think of Lee on that trip.

I was very happy to photograph my Woodlands friends, A. because they are a lot of fun, B. because I LOVE The Woodlands, and C. because Lee (and her family) is the coolest person. I photographed them in April and couldn't believe how easy-going they were. Turns out, they are always that carefree! It was no different this time!

I love this picture of Owen:

And Ava is such a doll.
